Things I learned from Solitaire

December 20, 2007

That obsessing about your last mistake likely means missing your next opportunity

That 7’s are very rarely useful, but they try

That Ace’s are always useful, but they don’t

That the comfort of repetition can be mistaken for engagement

That mediocre pursuits linger, and little failures bury deep

That it’s only fun when I pretend something is on the line

That queens are untrustworthy, as are 3’s

That dark places often hold the thing we need most

That the less stake people have, the more they need to make their opinions known

That I quit when things are going poorly, and get bored when things are going well.

I learned that very same lesson from the recesses of a fridge stocked with expired food. That miracle ripe banana in the bottom of the fruit drawer thinger will live on in memory for ages to come…good bloody day.

Solitaire is the only game that takes the time to remind you that you’re alone.

Damn. I can’t even begin to tell you how simply brilliant and poignant that is. Sort of like applying “in bed” to every fortune you find in a cookie.

Don’t try to understand my logic. It works for me.
